How to choose accounting software in 2026: eight questions before you subscribe
A pretty interface is not enough. These questions reveal whether a program will protect your books or wear them down.
Choosing accounting software is a decision you live with for years, and switching later is costly. Before you subscribe, ask these eight questions — and test the answers yourself during the trial, not in a sales demo.
- Does every document book its own entry, or do you type entries beside documents?
- Do documents pass an approval before entering the books, and is the approved locked?
- Are permissions enforced on the server, or does the screen merely hide buttons?
- Can you download all your data whenever you like — and what happens to it when the subscription ends?
- Is e-invoicing built into the program, or through an intermediary your invoices pass through?
- Do documents print on your letterhead with your seal, in Arabic and English?
- Are prices published and clear, and what happens when your staff or users grow?
- Does it cover your whole activity — HR, projects or healthcare — in the same books?
One last tip
Run one full cycle during the trial: issue an invoice, collect it, approve both, then open the trial balance and the customer statement. If the figures match without you typing a single entry by hand, you are looking at a program that works the way an accountant does.
